Vegetables Favor all vegetables, except tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet potatoes, and zucchini. Fruits Lighter fruits such as apples and pears are recommended. Reduce heavier fruits such as bananas, avocados, coconuts, melons, dates, and figs, as well as sour oranges. Grains Favor barley, corn, millet, buckwheat, rye, and oats. Reduce the intake of rice and wheat. Dairy Dairy products tend to increase Kapha, so low-fat milk is best. Boiling milk before drinking it makes it easier to digest. Adding turmeric or ginger to milk before boiling reduces its Kapha-increasing qualities. Do not combine milk with a full meal or with sour or salty foods. Beans Favor all beans except soybeans and tofu. Nuts and Seeds Favor sunflower and pumpkin seeds. Reduce all nuts. Herbs and Spices All spices, except salt, are pacifying to Kapha. Ginger is best for improving digestion. Sweeteners Favor raw, unheated honey. Other sweeteners increase Kapha and should be reduced. Oils Reduce all oils, except almond, corn, safflower, and sunflower oils in small amounts. Meat and Fish For nonvegetarians, white chicken meat, turkey, and seafood are acceptable. Reduce the intake of red meats.
